Let’s celebrate the 100th mile together. The 100 miles in 100 days walking challenge will be coming to a close on Saturday, September 23. We will end the challenge in conjunction with two other big events. The Green Street Challenge (which has been postponed a few times before) and the Vermont Great 2-4-6-8K Walk/Run/Relay.

The Green Street Challenge will be happening from 2 – 7 p.m. A temporary park and green space will be open and free to use that entire time. Bring your friends and family and come play on Center Street.

The Great 2-4-6-8K Race will start at 3:30 p.m. that day. You can register for the event at www.active.com or the day of the race. The event is raising funds to support the Foley Cancer Center. Sign up for the 2K (a little over 1 mile) and celebrate the 100th mile.

As for our 100 miles, 100 days celebrations:

From 2 – 3 p.m. (if you ordered one) come and pick up your T-shirt at the Come Alive Outside tent in front of the Paramount Theater on Center Street in Rutland. The Great Race will begin at 3:30 p.m., and you can sign up the day of the race if you feel up for it. The registration table will be next to our Come Alive Outside tent.

From 5 – 6 p.m. you have another chance to pick up your T-shirt. There will also be a place to drop off your completed 100 miles walking log booklet. Bring those anytime throughout the day for a chance to win a $100 gift card to Sensible Shoe. At 6 p.m. we will end the day with a group walk. Come and walk your 100th mile with fellow challenge participants. It will be a fun way to celebrate the end of this great challenge.

If you are not able to come to the event that day, I hope you do something fun to celebrate your 100th mile. If you are wondering how to get your T-shirt (if you ordered one), you can pick it up at the Rutland Recreation and Parks Department starting the week of September 25. Their office hours are 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., so come and get your shirt at the front desk. There will also be a box to drop off your completed walking log to enter the gift card drawing.

The gift card drawing will happen on Monday, October 2. We will notify the winner via email or phone! Don’t forget to write your name on your walking log before turning it in.

Thank you to everyone who made this year’s 100 miles walking challenge a success. With over 500 people signed up from Rutland County, we had a great turnout. I hope everyone found the challenge to be motivating and fun. Keep up these walks after the challenge has ended, to stay healthy and well.

Look for more information about another walking challenge to start in the new year. We are thinking a winter walking challenge would be a fun way to stay active on the cold snowy days and keep us moving.

Thank you again, and hope to see you at the Grand Finale on September 23, starting at 2 p.m. and ending with a group walk at 6 p.m. Happy walking everyone!
